Saraswati Mandir Trust is one of Thane’s most respected educational institutions, carrying forward a proud legacy of nearly seven decades across education, culture, science, and sports. The school was founded in 1952 by the visionary founder trustee, Mrs. Vimalatai Karve, with the support of co-trustees Dr. Chi. Shri. Karve and Shri G. Na. Gajre.

Recognised as a symbol of academic excellence in Thane, the Trust has, for over seventy years, made significant contributions to education, Indian culture, science, and sports, leaving a distinctive mark on Maharashtra’s rich educational heritage.

Over the past two decades, Thane has witnessed rapid demographic, social, and economic changes, alongside transformative advances in technology and modern educational practices.

 

While embracing these changes, the present Board of Trustees remains firmly committed to preserving the institution’s glorious traditions and steering it towards progressive, future-ready growth. The school’s former Headmaster, Shri Ashokji Tilak, has been honoured with the prestigious President’s Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to education.

The alumni of the school continue to make a meaningful impact across diverse fields, leaving a strong imprint through their knowledge, leadership, and values. Many former students today hold distinguished positions in the fields of education, social service, culture, the Indian Armed Forces, and politics.

 

Some of the prominent personalities among them are as follows:

  • Dr. Amol Dighe – Senior Scientist and recipient of the prestigious Dr. Bhatnagar Award

  • Mr. Hrishikesh Modak – Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer

  • Mr. Sanket Kale – Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Officer

  • Major Anupam Salve – Officer in the Indian Army

  • Hon. Mr. Naresh Mhaske – Sitting Member of Parliament and Former Mayor of Thane

Saraswati Secondary School, the institution’s secondary division, has consistently achieved outstanding academic results, with hundreds of students securing positions in the merit list of the SSC (Class 10) examinations. Several students have achieved the distinction of securing first or second rank in the Mumbai Division. The school has also repeatedly produced girl toppers as well as top rank holders from socially underrepresented communities, reflecting its inclusive and merit-driven approach to education. In the field of sports, many athletes trained through the institution’s Sports Centre have excelled at national and international levels across various disciplines. In recognition of excellence in sports, three former students and three sports teachers of the institution have been honoured with the prestigious Chhatrapati Award, underscoring the school’s strong legacy in both academics and athletics.

Pre primary School

The Pre-Primary Department of Saraswati Mandir Trust offers foundational education for children aged 3 to 8 years, structured into three age-appropriate stages: Kilbilghar (3–4), Phulghar (4–5), and Phalghar (5–6). Established in June 1955, the programme focuses on experience-based learning through play, exploration, self-created materials, and creative activities to build early cognitive, social, and physical development. It emphasises meaningful interaction with parents, supportive teacher guidance, and participation in national early learning forums. Along with a structured timetable and welcoming environment, the department prepares children for smooth transition to formal primary schooling and nurtures holistic growth, creativity, and joyful learning.

Cultural Academy

Lalit Kala Academy, an initiative of Saraswati Mandir Trust, works towards nurturing fine arts among children through structured classical dance education. Under the joint guidance of Lalit Kala Academy and Kalaprangan Trust, Bharatanatyam training is offered, focusing on emotional expression, physical fitness, discipline and cultural values. Students are systematically prepared for Gandharva examinations under the guidance of experienced faculty. Along with Bharatanatyam, a dedicated Kathak Dance Academy also functions under Lalit Kala Academy, providing authentic training in North Indian classical dance. Together, these programs ensure holistic artistic, mental and cultural development of students through India’s rich dance traditions
